Intro to Watercolor Recommended Supply List

Recommended Supplies

  • Watercolor paints

Artist quality paints, such as Winsor & Newton Artists’ Watercolor Tubes, Daniel Smith Watercolor Paints, Holbein Artists’ Watercolors, Sennelier Watercolors, are recommended. If buying tube colors, I suggest getting a “cool” and a “warm” version of red, blue, and yellow. For example:

Warm:                                      Cool:

Cadmium Red                     Quinacridone Red
French Ultramarine Blue      Phtalocyanine Blue
Quinacridone Yellow             Hansa Yellow

  • Brushes

#12 or 14 round and 1” or 1 1/2” flat. Sable and squirrel hair brushes are the best but a good quality synthetic brush, such as Windsor & Newton Cotman or any Golden Taklon brush will be quite adequate for this class.

  • Watercolor paper

140Lb cold press paper is recommended. I suggest a Strathmore 9×12” or larger watercolor block and a couple of 22×30” sheets of similar paper (Canson Montval, Arches, Fabriano, Lanaquarelle are all good choices).

  • Palette

A Styrofoam plate or two will do.

  • Water container

You can use plastic tubs that sour cream and whipped cream come in or food storage containers.

  • #2 pencil
  • Soft eraser
  • Your choice of paper towels, Kleenex tissues, or clean rags
  •  Sketchbook
  •  Drop cloth for easy cleanup. Any kind of a sheet, old tablecloth, or plastic tablecloth will do.

Optional supplies:
Sponge
Staple gun
Easel
Pocket knife
Palette knife

A basic set of pan watercolor paints, watercolor paper block, and two brushes will be available for purchase in class. The cost is $30.
