- Sketchbook
- Portable paint set (or palette that you can fill with tube colors)
- 1 or 2 brushes (ones you use the most)
- Small palette or paper plate (unless it comes with your paint set)
- Portable easel – if you have one. You can also work on your lap. En Plein Air Pro and Joe Miller Signature Field Easel are good choices for watercolor plein air.
- Paper towels or rag
- Painting surfaces – blocks, pads, or ¼ sheets (11x15”). If working on sheets of paper, bring a board and something to clip the sheets to it (bulldog clips work well)
- Pencil. Mechanical pencils are more convenient, as you don't need to sharpen them.
- Waterproof pen (Sakura Pigma Micron felt-tip pen is one example)
- Water container
- A bottle of water, just in case
- Folding chair/stool
- Hat
- Drink (the hotter the better)
- Snacks
- iPod / MP3 player to get you in the zone :)
- Camera – if you would like to take pictures for future reference
